If you know how to find a C# on your bass, know what a quarter note rest

is, and can read TAB, then you can skip the rest of this and move on.

If not, or if the review will do you good, then read on! This article will help

you learn to play bass guitar.

A piece of music is composed of a bunch of notes arranged together. These notes are

organized into sets of 12 notes called octaves, and each of these 12

notes has a name. If you sit down at a piano, you'll see that it has

88 keys, 52 white and 36 black, and that each of these keys produces a

different note. The white keys all have one-letter names; the first one on

the left (lowest note) is called A, the next one up is B, and so on. The

seventh white key is called G, and the next white key, the eighth, is also

called A; it begins the second octave. The ninth white key is B, the tenth

C, and so on, until the 52nd and last white note, which is a C..

The black keys are named by their relation to the nearest two white keys,

so each one has two names. First, they may be called "sharp", with the name

of the white key below them: eg, the lowest black key is called A sharp, as

it's immediately above A. There is no black key immediately above B; the second

black note is C#, and so on up the keyboard. Second, black keys may also

be called "flat", with the name of the white key above them: thus, the lowest

black note can also be thought of as B flat, since it's immediately below

the B. Similarly, the black key between D and E can be called either D sharp

or E flat. For now, you can treat the two names as interchangable. You may be wondering

what does piano have to do with it, I want to learn bass. The piano was made for music

and is a very good visual example of how music works. Understanding the piano will

help you understand how your bass guitar is set up and thus music theroy also.

An octave runs from A to G#, 12 notes (7 white keys and 5 black keys)

and then the names repeat for the next octave. Actually, the starting point

doesn't matter: any 12 notes in a row (which will always contain 7 white keys

and 5 black keys) are called an octave.

The strings of a bass are tuned to produce the 4 notes E, A, D, and G

(from thickest string to thinnest). Thus, if you play an E on the piano,

and the open E string on your bass, you'll get the same note (if you choose

the right octave on the piano, that is). Moving up one fret on the string

produces the next highest note. That is, the open A string produces an A

note (hence the name). Fingered at the first fret, it produces an A sharp,

or B flat. Second fret produces a B. Third fret produces C (since there is

no black key above B), fourth fret C sharp, and fifth fret produces D, the

same note as the open D-string. And so on up the fingerboard. With this

knowledge, you should be able to find two or three versions of each note

on your bass. For example, you can get an F at the 1st fret of the E string,

at the 3rd fret of the D string, at the 8th fret of the A string, and at

the 10th fret of the G string. (The 3rd-D note and the 8th-A note are in

the same octave: the 1st-E note is one octave below and the 10th-G note is

one octave above.) Make sure you can find any given note somewhere on your

bass without too much effort, and that you know the names of the notes

produced by playing a given string at a given fret, at least up to the

12th fret.

The next thing to mention is the way songs are arranged in time. Songs

are divided into measures: a common song length is about 100 measures. Each

measure is a certain number of beats long: in almost all modern music there

are four beats to each measure, although other length measures are also used.

Each note in the song has a given duration, and a note that lasts for four

beats is called a whole note. A note that lasts for two beats is called a

half note, and two half notes are the same length as one whole note. Similarly,

there are quarter notes, eighth notes, and sixteenth notes. (In England

these notes have different names. I'll be sticking to American usage

throughout this lesson series.) Each quarter note receives one beat, and

the quarter note is the basic building block of time and of rhythm. Eight

eighth notes make up a four-beat measure, as you can see, as do four quarter

notes and 16 sixteenth notes. Measures can contain notes of different lengths,

so that a quarter note, a half note,and two eighth notes also make up one

measure.

Other time durations can be written by "dotting" a note: in standard

notation, one literally writes a dot next to the note. Dotting a note makes

it last half again as long as it normally would. Thus, a quarter note lasts

as long as two 8th notes: a dotted quarter note is 50% longer, so it lasts

as long as three eighth notes. Thus, two quarter notes have the same length

as a dotted quarter note and an eighth note. Similarly, a dotted half note

lasts for the same amount of time as three quarter notes: a dotted half note

and a quarter note together make up one measure.

The last thing to know is that rests, or times when the bass is not playing,

are named the same way: thus, a whole rest means that the bass does not play

for one measure. A quarter rest means that the bass does not play for one

beat, and there are eighth rests and dotted half rests and so on.

One last note: in some jazz and classical music, a note other than the

quarter note is given the one-beat length. Since almost all music is written

with the quarter note getting one beat, I've assumed it is so throughout

the lesson series. However, if you get into more difficult music, you may

run into music where the half-note or the eighth-note is one "beat" long.

Dont worry about this until we need to.

The final this you need to know is how to read TAB. Bass tabulature, or

TAB for short, is a simple method for writing bass music. There are several

different versions of tabulature, but the following features are common to

almost all of them.

Bass tab is written on four-line staves. In text interfaces these are usually

written using dashed characters. Each space corresponds to one string on the

bass: the lowest space corresponds to the E string, the next lowest to the A

string, the next to the D string, and the highest to the G string. A number on

a given space represents a note played at the given fret on the corresponding

string; thus, to indicate playing a G at the third fret on the E string,

one would write:

Notes are played from the left of the staff to the right; thus, an

fret on the D string, and an E at the 9th fret on the G string.

Various fingering techniques can be noted in TAB as well. This is done by

writing a single character after the note being fingered. The most common of

these are:

p - pull off from previous note

- slide up to note

b - bend note

S - slap the note with the right-hand thumb (left hand if left-handed)

P - pop the note with the right hand (ditto)

t - tap the note with the right hand (ditto)

H - harmonic

What would give anyone the idea to put some sticks into an animals stomach and blow on them?? A hornpipe-like instrument was the first of its sort, but it is unclear when the bag was attached. Similar instruments were used in the Middle East long before the birth of Christ. They have been an important aspect of Scottish life since Medieval times.

In 400 BC, Ancient Greeks used bagpipes made with man's best friend. That's right, a dog skin bag with bones for chanters!!! Emperor Nero was said to have played the pipes as Rome burned. Starting in the second millennium, bagpipes start frequenting many artists canvas’ and we began to see more written information as well.

It is also said that the pipes were present at the famed Battle of Bannockburn in Scotland in 1314. For over 1000 years, the pipes have been associated with the Celtic race.

Although the Great Highland Bagpipes are the most common in the world, there are actually over 30 varieties in many different countries. Since their history was first studied in the 18th century, the bagpipes' distinct sound and appearance has become recognizable throughout the world.

Bagpipes, did you know?

· The trumpet was the instrument of the Roman cavalry, and the bagpipe was used by the Roman infantry

· The original pipes in Scotland only had one drone attached. It wasn’t until the1500’s that a second was added, and the 1700’s until the third drone was added.

· The Brazilians call the bagpipe gaita de foles, which is Portuguese for "screams of the tortured monkey".

Getting the Most Out of Your Pipe Bag

The pipe bag is one of the most likely areas to leak air. Any air lost through the bag is air that you have to replace, making it harder to play.

Regardless of the bag material, it must be airtight. To check this, plug the chanter and drone stocks with rubber stoppers. Blow up the bag until it is as full as it can get, then squeeze it for 30 seconds. If after 30 seconds, it takes more than 1 breath to fill the bag, it is losing too much air.

Common sources for leaks are the seams, around the stocks, or the stocks themselves. If you can't hear or feel the leak, use a soapy water solution to check. If the leaks are through the seam on a hide bag, a good seasoning may correct it. If the leaks are through the seam on a synthetic bag, it likely needs replacing. Re- tie in the stock for leaks around the stocks on a hide bag. On a synthetic bag, if the leak is between the rubber grommet and the bag, it will have to be replaced. If the leak is between the stock and grommet, you can wrap some plumber's tape around the stock at the top of the grommet, or remove the stock and build up the diameter at the tie in groove with the tape. If the leak is through the stock, there is a crack in the wood. These cracks are most common underneath the stock ferrules, but can also occur lower down. If this is the case, you will need to have the stock repaired by a bagpipe maker/repairer.

Tuning Your Bagpipes with the Korg Chromatic Tuner

Tuning your pipes can be difficult- the drones must be precisely tuned to each other and also to the chanter. Each note of the chanter must be pitched so that it properly harmonizes with the constant background sound of the drones. This tuning can be done with a well trained ear, but if you're lacking one of those, a chromatic tuner can be used.

Tuning the Chanter
Sound the low A on your chanter and note where it is tuning on the meter. Adjust the calibration buttons until your low A reads "0" on the meter. The green tuning light will come on when your meter is in tune with low A. Use the meter notes and offsets from "0" in the following table to tune the other notes of the chanter. Ensure that the meter is reading the correct "note" which will show up in the top right corner of the tuner. Notes "C" and "F" show up as "C#" and "F#" on the tuner. The first column is the Note. Second column is the ratio to Low A. Third column is the Meter Note. Fourth column is the Meter Offset.

If the top hand is sharp compared to the bottom hand, lift the reed slightly out of the chanter to bring the pitch of the top hand down. Add some hemp to the reed if necessary. If the top hand is flat to the bottom hand sink the reed further into the chanter. This will bring up the pitch of the top hand relative to the bottom hand. To flatten individual notes, add a piece of tape to cover the top of the first open hole on the chanter. Sharpening individual notes requires modification to the chanter reed or chanter and should only be done by experienced players.

Tuning the Drones
The drones are tuned to the low A on the pipe chanter. Sound low A on your chanter and adjust the calibration button until the meter reads "0". Adjust the tuning on each of your drones until they are reading "0" on the meter also.

The Bagpipe Tree

The Mpingo tree, also called the African Blackwood, is a member of the Rosewood family that grows in the Miombo woodlands of Africa. It has a high density, great durability, and natural oils that seal the surface of the wood, making it great for musical instruments like the bagpipes.

These trees often grow naturally knotted and twisted. To use them for musical instruments, they must be straight and without defects. Less than 2% of all the wood harvested can be used for this purpose! It takes about 70 years for the Mpingo tree to reach maturity followed by 3 years of processing before it can be used to make an instrument.

The middle of the wood is black and so hard that it can blunt an axe and must be drilled before screwing or nailing it. The wood is very resistant and the roots support bacteria that increase soil fertility.

As Tanzania's national tree, it is the most valuable tree harvested and also the most expensive, requiring special equipment to harvest. These trees are currently at risk of being wiped out. There has been a shortage over the last 20 years due to weather, political instability and economics. In many places, the trees are illegally cut down or burned to clear the area for farming and livestock. Burning kills the younger trees and leaves the older trees deformed and diseased.

There are efforts in place to save the "bagpipe tree" and create a sustainable supply for the future. Reaching these goals will not only increase the amount of trees legally harvested, but will also reduce poverty in the area, help to rebuild the forests, conserve water, reduce soil erosion and, keep the music playing!

All of the Blackwood we use comes from a supplier that purchases wood from a government approved seller whose trees are legally harvested and documented. The wood is only supplied to musical instrument companies.

The government of Tanzania is trying to cut back on the amount of tree smuggling by scanning and conducting physical searches of cargo shipments. There are increasing efforts to monitor the legal trade of African Blackwood and police the illegal trade. All of these factors add to the cost of the wood. Trouble Shooting Kinnaird Drone Reeds

We get calls and emails regularly from people who need help with the Kinnaird Drone Reeds. This article addresses some of the most commonly asked questions.

1. Double Toning- The reed is not getting enough air pressure. The most likely reason is that the reed is set up too strong. Move the bridle towards the vibrating end of the reed to make it easier. Another issue may be air restriction to the stock. There may be a build up of seasoning in the bottom of the stock or a drone valve or enhancer may be too restrictive. Remove the valve or enhancer to see if it solves the problem. Check their instructions to adjust them so that they take less pressure to open. Canister systems can also cause restrictions. Check that all hoses are not kinked or leaking and that the canister is not too close to the bag restricting airflow.

2. Squealing- The reed tongue could be too short. Lengthening the tongue should fix it. If not, there may be some debris underneath the tongue. Clean under the tongue by inserting a dollar bill or business card under the tongue and dragging it out the side, while applying gentle pressure to the top of the tongue. You can also remove the tongue and clean the tongue and bed of the reed with warm soapy water.

3. Drones Shutting Off- Often the reeds are set up too easy or there is excess moisture. If the reeds are too easy, move the bridle away from the vibrating end of the tongue to make them stronger. If the reed is fine when you start, but shuts down after playing for a while, it is likely a moisture issue. Insert a dollar bill or business card underneath the tongue to absorb some of the moisture. You can also remove the nose cone and put a pipe cleaner up the bore of the reed & in the end of the nose cone. Dry out the bores with a cotton brush. Moisture control systems are great solutions and come in a variety of styles.

Playing the bagpipes is a great way to build up your lung capacity and is great for the cardiovascular system, but have you ever wondered what you might be breathing in?

Fret buzz is one of the most frustrating problems you can have when you first learn to play the guitar. Part of the problem is that there are so many possible causes, some of which are easily fixed, and others, less so. It makes sense then, to first of all try and identify what's causing the problem and eliminate easily fixed causes first.

The first thing to check, if your guitar is electric, like, say a Gibson or Epiphone Les Paul, is that it's the guitar itself that is buzzing and not the electrics. Unplug your guitar from the amp and check if the buzz is still there. Now check that the strings are seated properly in the nut (at the top of the neck) and the bridge. On old guitars, the nut, especially if its plastic, can get worn down and cause fret buzz.

If none of that is causing the problem, hold the guitar up to eye level and look across the strings, level with the pick-ups. Are the pick-ups touching the strings? If so, that could also cause buzzing.

Next, check your strings. If they're grubby or have a film of sweat on them, that could be causing buzzing. Clean them with a damp cloth, or use a specialist cleaning product like GHC Fast Fret. The fretboard itself can also get grubby. Sweat and dirt builds up over time on the fretboard and next to the frets themselves. Clean that too, preferably with a cleaner designed for the job. If not, a damp cloth is better than nothing.

If none of that works, you may have to get professional help from a guitar tech. The cause could be a fret that's not level with the others and needs sanding, or a saddle that needs adjustment. It could also be a worn nut that needs to be heightened or replaced, or a truss rod that needs to be adjusted.

Clean the fretboard, replace the strings and make all the checks outlined above. If none of those work, take your guitar to your local guitar store and ask their technician to take a look. It shouldn't cost too much to make the necessary adjustments. While you're there you might want to ask him to do a complete set-up for you. The Anatomy of an Electric Guitar Pick-up

Electric guitar pick-ups collect or 'pick-up' the vibrations of guitar strings which induce an alternating current in the coils of copper wire wrapped around poles in the pick-up. That current is then passed through potentiometers which modify volume and tone and through a guitar lead to an amplifier. The amplifier then uses either valves or transistors to convert that current to an audible sound and amplify it.

There are two main types of pick-up, the single coil variety found on guitars like Fender's Stratocaster and Telecaster, and twin coil humbuckers, found in Gibson and Epiphone guitars.

The humbucker was originally developed in the late 1950's by a Gibson employee, Seth Lover, in response to a problem with single coil pick-ups. The problem was that single coil pick-ups tend to be vulnerable to electromagnetic interference which produces an audible hum when amplified. The purpose of Lover's twin coil was to buck the hum, hence the name.

The humbucker has two coils of copper wire each wrapped around six magnetic poles. The coils are reverse wound and reversed in polarity. The effect of this is that the electromagnetic interference induces current in opposite directions in each pick-up and is thus cancelled out. At the same time, the signal from the vibration of the strings is increased. This is known as common-mode rejection. Guitars fitted with humbuckers, such as the Les Paul and SG, usually have one pick-up at the bridge and one at the neck, each with its own volume and tone controls and often a metal plate fitted over the top of the pick-up.

The other key property of twin coil pick-ups is that the two coils resonate at different frequencies and so the humbucker has a broader resonant peak than single-coil pick-ups. This broader resonant peak produces a fatter, warmer tone, one of the hallmarks of the Gibson Les Paul and Epiphone Casino, than the clear bright signature sound of the single coil pick-ups on the Fender Stratocaster.

Stuck in a rut and want to improve your guitar playing? Here's ten ways to do it easily and quickly and they won't cost you a penny.

1. Check your posture. It's something that's too often ignored, but posture is very important when you play guitar. You spend hours practicing and playing and most of that time is spent in the same position. Get it wrong and you you could be lining yourself up for all sorts of aches and pains. Also, correct posture helps you form chords and get those difficult to reach finger positions more easily. If you're sitting down, sit upright, don't slouch over the guitar. If you're standing with the guitar on a strap, keep your back straight and shoulders back.

2. Hold the guitar properly. Again this is something that's often overlooked, but it's important. And your right hand is as important as your left when it comes to correct positioning (swap that around if you play left handed). Your right palm shouldn't rest on the guitar, the only time it should make contact is if you're using it to dampen the strings to achieve a specific sound. Otherwise it should be off the guitar. Your left hand should bend at the wrist toward you and should be positioned so that the tips of your fingers can reach every string without obstructing the other strings.

3.Choose a time to practice and stick to it. There's no getting around it, playing guitar, like any other learned skill takes time, effort, and discipline. If you adopt an ad hoc approach to practice, you'll soon get out of the habit. So set aside some time, even if it's only an hour two or three times a week and make that your practice time.

4. Don't just play chords and solos. Your fingertips are the only point of contact between you and the keyboard and so they need to work perfectly. Playing the same chords and solos will allow you to become very good at those chords and solos, but nothing else. Hard Drive Based Players

The first main type is the hard drive based MP3 player. These are the highest capacity devices, starting at 20 GB of memory and going up from there. A hard drive based player, as the name indicates, contains its own hard drive and can probably hold every song you own. These players also tend to have larger screens, more features, and are easier to use--some even play videos. Micro Hard Drive Players

I gotta say I really like this software, it’s a great simplification of the traditional calendar. For the most part you don’t need the “big entry window” you can use the one line entry and it’s smart enough to put the 9AM in the “start time” for you… and the 11AM in the end tim so all you type is 9AM – 11AM Meet with John at 1313 Homer Street….. it will figure it out for you.

Now here’s the bit that I really liked

If you want to assign an event to other people in your “buddy list” you can simply start typing their name and the list of names will appear below with all the “john’s” in the list.. click the one you want and it adds it to thier calendar.

www.financ.in & www.financ.ca (or and while shopping in india for TLD’s I picked up a couple of other ones… www.borrrow.co.in and www.gam.in (I like delicious model of making words out of the domains ext… so is we did www.gam.in/g and www.financ.in/g you’d have some pretty valueable “word play” sites… both with millions of searchs.

Misspelled Domain Sells for Over $240,000 and Farm.Com Fetches $200,000 As Industry Reaps Another Strong Sales Crop

The highest sale of a typo domain we've ever seen and the $200,000 sale of a domain that had been donated to a charity headline another big week of domain sales. You may need smelling salts after looking at the whopping $242,400 price paid for the #1 domain, Mortage.com at Moniker.com/DomainSystems.com.

That, of course, is a common typo for "mortgage" which is a high value keyword. Based on the current Overture score of 455 with extension, this domain will bring in a lot of good leads, leads that multiple advertisers are presently bidding over $4 per click to get. Still we wouldn't want to hazard a guess on how long it will take for the domain to pay for itself in new loan business.

This week's co-headliner, Farm.com, is also a very interesting story. Massachusetts entrepreneur Tom Bird donated the domain to the 90-year-old Boston Foundation after learning the value of the URL had soared since it was first registered in the 1990s. Bird wanted to let the non-profit group (which supports hundreds of local charities) sell the domain to help fund it's good work.

The foundation enlisted Afternic.com to help them find a buyer for the domain, which they quickly succeeded in doing, overseeing the $200,000 sale of the name to Pets United LLC. That company already owns such gems as Horse.com, Dog.com and Fish.com. They purchased Fish.com through Afternic for $1 million in November in the highest reported domain sale of 2005.

Afternic waived their sales commission so that the foundation could keep 100% of the sales proceeds. Afternic President and CEO Roger Collins said "Donating the fees was the least we could do to not only aid the mission of The Boston Foundation, but also help fulfill the donor's philanthropic vision." Kudos to Mr. Bird and Afternic for their selfless contributions to this worthy organization.

Those two six-figure sales were the tip of another mammoth domain sales iceberg this week. All but one domain on our new Top 20 chart hit at least five figures. Moniker/DomainSystems wound up posting three of the top five sales, also scoring with #4 IR3X.com at $68,000 and #5 Orleans.com at $45,450. IR3X.com is another amazing story. The high traffic domain (3,722 with the extension in Overture) had previously been purchased at Sedo.com just two months ago for only $2,599!

SnapNames.com had the most chart entries, taking five slots on the Big Board, including #3 FreePicks.com at an eye-popping $91,250! SnapNames also posted back to back winners with #6 BigBang.com ($30,050) and #7 LagunaBeachRealEstate.com ($27,350).

After being challenged by a wide variety of extensions last week, .com reasserted itself this time out, taking all but four of the chart positions. The other four all went to Country Codes, with #8 History.co.uk headlining that group after selling for a healthy £12,500 ($21,667) at Sedo.

Canada's .ca had another big week with #12 Traffic.ca going for 15,000 CAD ($12,902) at Sibername.com and #16 Financing.ca pulling $12,000 at Pool.com. Those were part of a boatload of excellent .ca drops that we told you about last week. You'll see many more completed .ca sales in our ccTLD section below.

A hot rumor going around this week says AOL bought Games.com in the $10-$11 million range. We haven't been able to confirm anything but the public WhoIs record did change a few days ago with AOL now shown as the owner.
